Proficiency Exam Information

Things to know before taking these exams

At the beginning of each academic year, two exams are conducted for students who will receive education within the School of Foreign Languages: the Foreign Language Proficiency Test (Exemption Exam) and the Foreign Language Class Placement Exam. The content of the exams may vary according to different undergraduate and associate degree programs.

What do these exams aim to measure, and who should take them?

Foreign Language Proficiency Test (Exemption Exam): It assesses whether students have the language proficiency to continue in their departments. Students who demonstrate sufficient success in these exams continue in their departments, while those who do not achieve an adequate language score take preparatory education.

  • Only students in departments and associate degree programs with mandatory preparatory classes take this exam.
  • Students who wish to receive optional preparatory education cannot sit this exam.

Foreign Language Class Placement Exam: It is implemented to determine the language levels of students who did not score sufficiently in the Foreign Language Proficiency Test (Exemption Exam) and those who wish to receive optional preparatory education, placing them in classes suitable for their levels to receive foreign language education. The exam consists of question types progressing from easy to difficult.

All students intending to take preparatory education must participate in this exam.

What are the required scores to be considered successful in these exams? Besides these, which national and international exams are considered equivalent?

Passing grades in exams recognized by ÖSYM (YDS, YÖKDİL, TOEFL IBT, PTE) allow exemption from the preparatory class if the results are submitted to the school secretary's office with a petition.

To be exempt from the Preparatory Program, it is sufficient to obtain the score specified below.
